Subject: Teaching Philosophy

We have been talking in our MUS110 (1st yr. intro to teaching music class) lately about our individual teaching philosophies which has made me think back to my experience in district festival band 2 yrs ago under the direction of Dr. Barry E. Kopetz (composer and currently the director of Capital University's symphonic band). Dr. Kopetz is one of very few music teacher I have had that taught life lessons through music. Most directors teach music to people, whereas Dr. Kopetz teaches people through music. I was just curious what everyone else's opinions on this fasion of teaching were. Do you think we should be teaching several things, though sometimes not related to music at all, through music, or should we just stick to teaching purely musical concepts?

Of course you should teach other things besides music! Music isn't the be-all, end-all of life, is it? I mean, yeah, we're music majors, and it can seem that way sometimes. But there IS more to life than music, and as teachers in public schools we will be responsible for teaching that to students. Now, I'm not talking about teaching them how to do math or anything. I'm talking about teaching them the importance of teamwork, attention to detail, responsibility, goal setting, appreciation for the arts, and any number of things not taught in any textbook. Yes, music is important, but those other things are just as important. :)

Besides, if you try to teach just music to people who are in your ensemble only because it's a gen ed requirement, you won't reach them. However, if you try to teach music to them through other values that would mean more to them, you may reach more of them that way.
