Sadly, it seems that nowadays, teachers not only have to be educators, but surrogate parents. I think much of the problem comes from the fact that a lot of the people who are becoming parents these days aren't qualified to be parents. They're the "Generation Xers" who grew up in a world that says that you have the freedom to do what ever YOU want to do because there are no consequences. Get yourself in debt? Call one of these debt consolidator guys and you don't have to worry about it. Want a new car now? Sure, buy now and don't pay for a whole year! Who cares if you don't have the money? It's your right to live the good life, and if a problem comes up it's not YOUR fault, it's society's or the government's or your parent's for not raising you right, but it's definitely not YOUR fault.

Is it any wonder kids that many kids today have no sense of self-discipline or responsibility, when their parents are teaching them values that the world revolves around THEM and no one else has the right to tell them what to do. Sadly, teachers are the ones who kids have to learn their values from. I'm not saying that it's our job to make sure kids are raised properly, but we need to be good role models for kids by dressing and acting in a professional manner, keeping our emotions in check, being prepared and responsible people, and having positive attitudes.

If we can do these things, I think we will contribute a little something to the growth of our students. It's still the parents's jobs to raise the kids, but we can show them through our own behaviors how a responsible adult should act. Maybe, with any luck, it will get passed onto the kids.

I have to agree. Common sense taught by parents to their children is declining in the world, and trust me. its not just in Valpo. I truly hope that is does not come to the point where teachers have to instill common sense in their pupils.

Hi Lisa:
Why do you think it hasn't already reached that point? I would guess that many teachers will tell you that their students exhibit very little in the way of common sense. In general, common sense is becoming more uncommon!
