While I have absolutely no personal marching band experience, I do believe it should get gym credit. Physical education classes are supposed to be geared towards increasing students awareness of their own bodies. Physical awareness is enhanced greatly by having to perform complex and coordinated movements. This teaches students how their body can be oriented in different situations, how to imitate the movements of other people, and a number of other important life-skills. Marching band certainly seems to be physical education from my vantage point.

I think giving gym credit for marching band is a great idea. I know a lot of kids in my high school never took gym seriously with me included. We did the same thing every year and to be honest it wasn't very well done. It doesn't set a very good example when your gym teachers are telling you to do something that they can't even do. I got a lot more out of marching band than I ever got out of a gym class. For one my high school was big on marching band and we didn't have a real "band camp" like most schools have. Instead, we had our band camp at our high school and instead of having it for a week in the middle of the summer where we would forget everything that we learned, we went from August 1st Monday-Friday 8 am-noon until school started at the end of August. We had a lot of drills to learn. During that time in the summer we would get our pre-game learned as well as probably our first 2 or 3 shows of the season. We also did high stepping which in itself should be counted as a gym credit. We had to do drills of high stepping non-stop. It was very active to say the least. However, I doubt my high school would even stop and think about making marching band a gym credit because they are so obsessed with sports that they would say it doesn't involve enough activity to be considered for gym credit.
