There actually can come a time when you don't make any more money teaching than you would retiring and just staying home. In that case you're actually teaching for free, more or less. I know several teachers who have "retired" when they have put in their time (used to be 30 years, but now it's moving to 35)and then signed on as either a full-time temporary teacher or a long-term sub. Some of them went right back to teaching the same classes they had before retirement. By doing it that way, though, they are getting their retirement pay and then being paid a second time (at a lower rate) for continuing to teach. By double-dipping they're able to make lots of money for those last few years!

I say as long as they desire to teach is still there, they let them teach...

Although, it's important also that they are constantly looking for ways to become a better musican, regardless of age.
