Subject: How long is too long to teacher music.

Hey here's one for everyone and this is easy. I know my director from high school has 53 years of teaching unders him. My question is about how long is too long to teach. I mean for everyone how long could you last teaching. Personally for me I would go maybe afew years (2 or 3 years) after the school district offers me retirement.

Well, obviously, one can go as long as they are physically and mentally able- a main concern being health issues. Another is patience. As some people age, some age gracefully and become overly kind, while others become irritable and nasty and really just not fit to handle children anymore. I personally think that if health issues (which are just a part of life, not just aging) become a factor, you can't jeopardize the students and their education/experience by walking around like a crocodile with a toothache or become lazy in the way you teach. How long you teach shouldn't be an ideal number set in stone, nor a plan set in our head. Since when do things really work out the way we plan for them to??? As long as you are still effective as an educator, you should keep going. But if you're fifty-nine years old and sit in your office, staring out at the junior high band, with a sharp object muttering about how you could beat them all and no one would ever convict you... it's time to retire. I personally would like to step down gracefully after many years of teaching and retire to a warmer environment with my old, wrinkly (but still cute) husband, dying in my sleep a few years later.

The moment I read this post, it made me think of what my high school band director always use to say to us. He always told us that he could retire whenever he wanted on disability, and therefore there was always talk about when he would retire. Everyone thought it would be when his son graduated which was last year, but he's still there. He always said that he will keep teaching until he doesn't enjoy it anymore. I think that's an interesting thought. I've worked really hard to get to where I am and by the time I'm a teacher for that long, I'll have worked 10 times as hard. Obviously this is something that I want to do more than anything so I wouldn't mind teaching past retirement as long as I am able. Personally, I think I would get bored just being at home all the time. I'd rather be out doing what I love for as long as I can.

Personally, I plan on working with choirs for the rest of my life. As long as I am passionate about my music and capable of expressing that to my students, I plan on teaching.

I agree with both of the earlier posts. Teach until you are too unhealthy to, have no desire to, or cannot teach effectively. If you want to keep teaching, thats just one more reason to stay healthy.

Oh Yeah! I definitely agree. I mean how could someone give up what they really love doing. I personally know I am going to love teaching. I cannot wait to have my own choir and to pass my musical knowledge onto others. I honestly cannot imagine giving that up unless I had to because of health reasons and/or death. I am not kidding I plan on working in this field until I am incapable of working.

Hoenestly? Never. I don'thave the mental compasity to teach others. Well, maybe voice lessons. In that case, I guess I could teach until I'm eighty or something.

I too believe that a teacher should keep teaching until health issues come up or there is no longer a desire to teach. There will come a time in any teacher's career that no matter how much he or she wants to teach, it is no longer possible to do so.

I agree. I think you should teach until you don't have the urge to do it anymore. If you are thinking about money on the other hand though, after 37 or so years of teaching I hear that you are better off retiring because i guess you actually start to lose money if you continue. This is something that I heard so if I'm wrong I just heard it through the grapevine.

There actually can come a time when you don't make any more money teaching than you would retiring and just staying home. In that case you're actually teaching for free, more or less. I know several teachers who have "retired" when they have put in their time (used to be 30 years, but now it's moving to 35)and then signed on as either a full-time temporary teacher or a long-term sub. Some of them went right back to teaching the same classes they had before retirement. By doing it that way, though, they are getting their retirement pay and then being paid a second time (at a lower rate) for continuing to teach. By double-dipping they're able to make lots of money for those last few years!

I say as long as they desire to teach is still there, they let them teach...

Although, it's important also that they are constantly looking for ways to become a better musican, regardless of age.

I really don't think there is a certain length of time that someone should teach. If a person really enjoys what he/she is doing and is still capable of teaching, then I think that he/she should continue to do so. It is the person's own choice.

I don't think there is a time limit in teaching music. The teacher just needs to be competent in their teaching and want to still do what they are doing.

There isnt a time limit to how long someone can teach because some people are capable of teaching longer then others. If that person is still an excellent teacher after 53 years, is happy, and wants to continue, I say all for it.

I don't think that there is any general time limit for teaching. I believe that as long as the passion is there, you should keep going. Keep in mind that you still need to be mentally and physically capable.

One other option that exists: give out private lessons. If health becomes too much of an issue for the public life, or the stress of dealing with an entire ensemble is too overwhelming, step down and give private lessons. Chances are that only the students who really care about thier craft will want lessons, ensuring that they will make themselves a pleasure to work with.

To me, teaching is like learning... you can never truly stop. It does not matter if you are teaching in a public school, or if you are a retired 500 year old... people can still learn something from you.

I do think there is a time when someone should retire from teaching. But it shouldn't be measured in years of teaching. My high school teacher who had 29 years of teaching my senior year of high school was retiring. Everyone could definitely tell he was ready to retire. He was no fun to be around, always grouchy, and just didn't teach anymore. He would just show up to get his paycheck...A person should retire when it isn't fun for them anymore and when they feel they can not fully do their job or give the students the teaching they deserve. As for me, I plan to teach till the day I day, or when they force me into retirement! =]

Like everyone else has been saying, I believe you should keep teaching for as long as it makes you happy. But once you lose that passion, you should stop, because without the passion you have nothing. The students will notice this change.
