I understand the frustration you are beginning to feel as you continue to work with Jason. As a teacher who probably has not had any expeience with a sudent who learns like Jason, it is easy to become frustrated. I think that you need to do a lot of foundation work with Jason to ensure that he understands basic conepts and skills in addition and subtraction. This may be done by playing games with cards. Have him play cards with the addtion facts written on one side and the anwers written on the other side. You can aslo write addition and subtraction number facts on tag strips and place them and place them in small drawstring cloth bags. Jason can reach into the bag and pull them out. Writing the answers on th back of the cars makes themself checking. I have found this strategy to be very useful with students who learn differntly as they begin to see that they are learning and the task of adding and subtracting is no longer a tedious one. Once Jason is able to perform simple addition and subtraction, he will be able to move on to addtion and subtraction of two digit numbers. Working with Jason must be sythematic, methodical and sequential. Please be patient, he will get it!
