Have you tried using an abacus?

I use one to teach my 5yr old about currency. I show her the value of each coin with beads, so she can clearly see the difference between £1 (100 beads) and 1p (1 bead). Prior to my doing this she could not grasp that one coin had much more value than the other. But the visual representation helped her tremendously. I then used a combination of coins and the abacus to do addition and subtraction.
