I don't envy you Tess, it is an extremely challenging role that you are playing, and one which is often frustrating.

Establishing ground rules, that is, codes for acceptable behaviour, with sanctions when these rules are broken. Being consistent in imposing consequences 100% of the time is crucial. Find out tasks that the pupil likes doing e.g. time on the computer, making a k-nex model, time out with a football, and build these tasks into a reward scheme.

I am not saying that this will in any way 'cure' the problem, but if you are consistent, the pupil will learn that good behaviour equals reward, bad behaviour equals consequence. Make sure that the pupil realises that it is THEIR choice what happens next. Also, start every day anew, a blank slate. Don't take anything personally. Remain calm and objective. Later you can scream into a pillow.

Finally, keep written records of any incidents, a copy for headteacher, pupil's file, yourself. This can be useful to build up a picture of pupil's behaviour and can be used for meetings with outside agencies etc.
