My son struggles with dyslexia, when he was in the elementary school age group, at home we would play take the Scrabble board game, place the tiles up so that we could see the letters, take his spelling list and alternate spelling his spelling words on the board n the traditional crossword pattern. At the completion of each word placed on the board, he would write the word once, this would help us keep track of which words we have done and have him see the word again.

Another night we would do a different exercise. I purchase alphabet letters that were cut out according to the shape of the letter (found at a teachers store), every time we would do this, he would place the letters in an arch in alphabetical order front of him on the floor. I would then give him a word from his list and he would pull the letters out from the arch to make the word. I would praise him if he got it right on his own, but if it was incorrect I might ask him if he thought it didn't look right and why, we would then correct the word together. When the word was correct I told him to take a picture of the word. NOTE: it is okay if the child does not spell the word left to right, the dyslexic sees a word as a picture, not letters/word as the non dyslexic does.

I would highly suggest having the child tested through the school system as the interventions that they can do and accommodations that would be available to your child are worth the struggle for your child in the long run.

Overcoming Dyslexia by Shaywitz is helpful for the parent.
