Dear Vanessa Williams and Miss America,

Thanks to everyone for assistance in helping Buck O'Neil receive the recognition he deserves. George Bush awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to him which was accepted by his brother Warren. I was especially impressed by the quick response, only 8 weeks after his funeral.

Vanessa, did you talk directly to George or were there intermediaries? Whether directly of indirectly please convey thanks individually and collectively from Kansas City.

Buck was an inspiration to me. When I spoke with him he always made me feel as if I was one of his best friends. Whether you knew him for years or it was the first conversation he made you feel that way. I admired the quality, I think it comes from a genuine sincerity of heart and love for people.

There is an expression in the Bible called "gifts in men".
The thought is that some have been given special talents, abilities, qualities, etc by God that are gifts, blessings to the rest of mankind. Buck O'Neil certaintly underscored the truthfulness of the expression.

Thanks for the assistance.
My best of regards,
Randy

P.S. The speech that Ken Burns gave at Buck's funeral service is hall of fame material too. I hope the Negro Leagues Basebal Musuem comes out with a recording of it.
