- January 2nd 2004, German chancellor Gerhard Schroder accepted an invitation from France to attend the 60th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy. Schroder will become the first person to participate in this celebration from Germany. Sixty years after U.S., British and Canadian soldiers set foot on the French beaches and began their campaign to liberate Europe from Nazi forces.

- January 20th 2004 Germany’s finance minister has admitted that his company is having trouble fulfilling its promise to Europe of cutting down its deficit. Germany has broken the rules three years in a row. They somehow have so far managed to escape sanctions by saying they will be at Europe’s standards by 2005.

- January 28th 2004, surprisingly the German economy has "turned the corner" and is going to grow by up to 2 percent this year despite many concerns over the strong euro, according to a recent government report. Wolfgang Clement sadly said that the unemployment would fall 100,000 people to 4.28 million by the years end. The economy contracted by 0.1 per cent last year, its weakest performance since 1993.
