Mongolia’s Brutal winter decimates livestock
After having 3 arid summers they have hard extremely severe winters with temperatures below -45 for days at a time. The snow covers the grass so the cattle can’t eat. An estimated 1/3 or 11.2 million livestock have died. This is 30% of Mongolia’s GDP so it really hurts them economically

New Passports revive old family names
The rules for the new civil passports let families reacquire their family names. These names that identified them as part of a tribe were outlawed during the communist revolution of 1921. It is estimated that only 40% of Mongolians know their family name. The other 60% will be allowed to choose a family name from a list or create a family name.

Former Communist Rulers Win Elections
Former communist rulers won a landslide victory and promised not to return to the old communist ways and to help develop a market economy. They won 73 of the 76 seats in the Great Hural, Mongolia form of legislature. They say they will help privatize key state owned business and increase efforts to combat the social cost involved in the transition to a market economy.
