It has been an interesting week. We have three foster kittens, and you are in love with one of them. Handfoot and her twin, Shakes, are children of one of the feral calicos down the street. I thought I knew which one, until I realized that both were nursing them. Commander Fluffypants is the slightly older child of whichever calico did not give birth to the mini-twins. When I caught him, he was in the care of an older sister or cousin.

There are two daddy cats, one wearing orange stripes, the other a tuxedo, who seem to get along just fine. These cats, these feral cats, are a family.

And now, we're part of it. You are so good with those kittens. You get pretty excited around them, and your dad and I watch you closely to make sure you don't get too rough, but you're really sweet. For a four-year-old, and a boy, you're remarkable. And Handfoot is your special kid.

She and her sister have some kind of mild palsy. They won't make it outside, and the families Alley Cat Advocats had "waiting for kittens" suddenly aren't there for these imperfect little ones. So, for now, they're here with us. I have a feeling that once these ladies get good at the litter box and the water dish, homes will magically open, and we will have to say goodbye.

I think it will break your heart.

And I think we will foster more kittens.

But, what I want you to remember is how open your heart is today, how much you love that shakey little kitten, and how much she seems to love you back. Family comes in all shapes, sizes, and species. Sometimes you're born with it; sometimes, it's born from your heart.

You're a sweet person. You will have an enormous family.
