Time has rocketed by, and I have lost fresh recollection of what I saw and how you were even a year ago. I don't take enough pictures. I bust out the camera in fits and quivers, then put it away and forget. There's a roll of b&w film in the Pentax that goes back at least two years. So, I guess, I'll start with today and work backwards and forwards as we move along. Today was a hard one. There's been a lot of light in my life lately. Unfortunately, lupus doesn't like light, so... my hair's been falling out, my skin's been rashy, my bones have been achy. And I felt really bad about keeping you inside with me, watching that sappy movie. I know it isn't fair to you in some ways. I worry that you'll turn into some goth kid (not that there's anything wrong with that) and it'll be all my fault for keeping you inside in the dark. Note to self: get rid of horror novels before Samson starts reading. Which you've already done, at least to the extent of word recognition. Interesting word recognition. You've got the pokemon moves down. And this morning, you asked if I was sexy. I was a little freaked. I said, "No...." You said, "Your shorts say 'sexy.'" I look down. I can't read my pajama shorts upside down. There are hearts... and slowly I make out the words "I'M TOO SEXY FOR MY SHORTS." I don't know whether it's motherhood or the medicine that makes me so thick. Last week, you were rhyming words and asked me what rhymes with "dumb." I hit a few of the easy ones, and your Daddy helped out with the tough ones like "plum" and "slum." You asked why I couldn't do it. Daddy said, "Mommy's numb." You countered, "Or dumb!" Today, you cried for half an hour over a broken kite. You were so sad that it wouldn't fly, and you would not let me salvage the string. It needs its string. It needs us to fix it. So we did. It's still not going to fly with all that packing tape on it, but it looks much happier with its stick fixed and its string attached. You have size 13 feet. Almost. Your new sandals are a little big, but not much. You dress yourself. You wipe your own butt, pretty well. And you still hold my hair when you fall asleep at night. I feel bad about keeping you in the dark. I could have gotten a sitter to take you to the park. I just love having you here with me. I will write again soon.
