There is so much that I want to write about you. So many things have happened. We were in Kentucky for my Dad's memorial service. You put on a show with your cousins. My cousins, who are my age or older, all sat at the kids' table with our children, who are all only children, all about the same age. 35 years ago, give or take, we put on our last show. I sang the Chicken Song.

You were perfect. An angel. The best little traveler I've ever seen. And I am a basket case.

Still.

And you started kindergarten on Monday, September 11. And I love making your lunch. I didn't even hate the PTA meeting. Not one little bit. I signed up for the book drive.

Somehow, through all the changes and the big crises and the little ones, you sail through the rough stuff, mostly smiling. Always willing to be smiling.

Here's one thing I want you to remember about yourself:

Last weekend was your paternal cousin Molly's birthday. You played every game, and you won some and lost others. You took losing very well, went back, and played more. You thought Molly's gifts were cool, but you didn't seem to covet anything. You really wanted her to like what you got her. (She did.)

We spent the night with Molly and Sylvie. The next morning, Molly lost her first tooth. You were thrilled for her.

Do you get where I'm going with this? You are 5.66 years old. You already have the capacity to be happy for other people.

I love you.
