Another story about you (one that will become part of your legend):
Early in your kindergarten career, you learned a few things about bullies, and you learned them all within about 24 hours.
I worry about you. Despite your karate lessons, you are not a fighter. You are an exceptional negotiator (let's pause while Mom beams with ego-driven narcissistic pride - okay, back to the story), but your idea of sparring is to dodge and giggle. You have no sibling to beat on. Hitting is not allowed at home.
And, you are something of a know-it-all. You get that from both sides of your family, and I apologize.
All of this makes you bully bait. Or it did. You see, you are also quite tall, so lesser bullies will probably defer, but that leaves you with the tough ones.
At your school, there is a second - now - third grader named, well, let's call him Brutus. He's not a bad kid. He's a frustrated kid, and his coping skills could use a little polishing. The first time he met you, he knocked you down, and you went to your father.
He told you it was okay to use your self-defense moves outside the dojo - as long as it's in self-defense. When I heard the story, I was worried.
I pictured you trying to line up to throw a much larger kid. I pictured a kick gone wrong. I gave you far too little credit.
The next day, Brutus and his buddy came after you again. As they moved in on you, you dropped deep into horse stance, grabbed each one by the collar and shoved them backward. Then you pinched Brutus hard on the neck skin and, holding him there, said firmly, "You tried this on me yesterday, and I left you alone. Don't ever try it again."
You gave him one extra shove as you let go of his neck, and ... you made two friends.
You still run away giggling during karate sparring.
