 (Or, What I Made During the Summer of 2002)

I

128 to 115, 3 months.
It's numbers,
Simple math. Or is it art?
I'm whittling, carving, recreating
This wood
This flesh,
Master sculptor with a lifelike medium indeed.
Smooth, straight and precise
No messy curves:
Like fleas vaulting off a freshly-dead cat,
I am abandoning the very form that nourished my life.
Blood mars this work-in-progress,
Disappointment stinging more than
My artist's tools
As the toilet flushes,
Spinning, spitting,
Blood draining down
Dark and heavy as sin.

II

And the art is re-translated
Into necessary numbers,
Orderliness of lines no longer comforting
To this form that cannot hold itself together.
Finger-shaped discolourations dot
The white thigh-skin like freckles,
Blemishes by artist's hands frustrated
With the stubborn medium of flesh
That resists the chisel
Of swift, unnatural change.
