Manhood in danger!

By, Hemant Krishna V.

The other day, as I strode across a popular English theatre in the city, I caught the glimpse of a huge billboard showcasing two neatly shaven legs. What startled me was the gaggle of girls staring at it, with dreamy expressions on their faces. “God, rescue them!” I mumbled to myself and looked up, only to see the ‘Oh so pretty!’ face of Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt, who plays a warrior in a recent Box-office hit Troy.

I mused for a moment, “What is so manly about Pitt, that actually draws women, like a magnet draws iron fillings?” Forget the age-old moustache, which became unpopular with celluloid heroes somewhere in mid-twentieth century. But there are little disparities between the neatly shaven faces of our modern-day heroes and those of our heroines. To furnish just a couple of examples, Brad Pitt’s puny, upturned nose looks like a ditto of Drew Barrymore’s and Di Caprio’s wide and shiny eyes are simply as attractive as those of Kate Moss.

Is this the consequence of the feminist movement? Are our modern day suffragettes working on a secret mission to make the customary symbols of masculinity old-fashioned? I shudder to think of the consequences that might ensue from such a horrific turnabout. Imagine the fateful day, when our heroes will look more at home, squashing potatoes, rather than brandishing their swords in battlefields. The myth is being broken. Mr. Hero floating in the air and knocking down Mr. Villain is ceasing to be the ideal claptrap these days. Bulging biceps are going unnoticed. Instead men tapping their feet flexibly to romantic tunes now draws applause. What is all the more frustrating is to watch these rather babyish heroes, being cuddled, clucked over, chucked on the chin and tucked up in the bed by the tomboyish femme fatales on the screen.

Think of it women – Only a moron would liaise with a man prettier than she. It has since long been a woman’s prerogative to fuss over her lipstick shade. So be it. How uncouth and awful if men did this sort of a thing too? I in fact seriously suspect the marriage between David and Victoria is going through a bad patch, as they keep bickering over clothes and jewellry.

So I appeal sincerely to my feminine counterparts to solemnly reconsider their rejection of the traditional male blueprint – once personified on the screen by Clark Gable and Robert Mitchum – for something so effeminate. And dear men, it is a question of your identity. For God’s sake, pull yourselves together!
