] Date Posted: 20:40:23 12/16/04 Thu State government's suicidal attitude towards IT Sir, - The Dharam Singh govt is treating Bangalore's unique distinction of being India's IT capital with utter contempt. During S.M.Krishna's tenure as the Chief Minister, I can recall two instances, where the Wipro chief had vented his ire on the 'fatal' infrastructure in Bangalore. But like various others, his disgust too went unnoticed. His recent assertion could be a consequence of the culmination of his dissatisfaction. The administrative apathy of the consecutive governments towards the poor infrastructure has made Bangalore pay this heavy price. However, the IT giant's remark has to be treated with ample seriousness and Bangalore should not shrug its shoulders off with an 'if not you, someone else' attitude. Bangalore definitely has the potential to slake the whole of India's 'software thirst' and continue to be the sole umbrella for the mushrooming software companies, provided the state government does something in this regard. If in a period of 8-10 years, Chennai and Hyderabad could become what Bangalore was a decade ago, Bangalore certainly must have had the potential to become 'the only of its kind' Silicon city on Planet Earth. But our government seems to be least bothered about the prestigious distinction Bangalore has achieved over the years, as it proudly dons a 'rural-friendly' role. One ought to take a close look at the state budget, if he has to gauge the magnitude of negligence the ruling coalition is meting out to the IT city. However, if Bangalore doesn't anymore rule the roost in the software town, the blame should not be put on Wipro. If Azim Premji had allowed his 'Bangalore-affiliation' to butt in, he could not have made his company grow as big as it now is. So at the moment, the state government should plunge into some 'damage-control' exercise for the Himalayan disservice it has done to Bangalore. Or we will have to shortly behold the spectacle of 'how a tragic downfall can be snatched from the jaws of an imminent success story - in the making'.
