Looking inward is important as well, and while it may not be the BIGGEST part of my writing, it still occupies a large part of what I put into my characters. It's so hard to explain, isn't it? I guess....the best way I can is to say that I tend to look at myself, my life situations, my feelings/emotions starting from a very personal view and then (when I meditate) I focus on history and all the other people throughout the rivers of time who must have been in similar situations and felt similar emotions. I try to put it into a larger context to help me better understand myself from a dispassionate viewpoint. I think this helps me put mySELF into, say the character of Donnie from HOMETOWN.

I hope this makes some kind of sense. It's tough to put it into words. As for my poems, (except for a few), I tend to go totally into the macrocosm. They tend to be about issues like religion, history, horror/the macabre, and a lot I've written on philosophy and cosmology. The personal aspect comes into play when I write how these topics affect me personally.

See, I grew up on very non-introverted music. My first love being mostly political and sociological punk rock like Bad Religion, Dead Kennedy's, Down By Law, Rancid, Pennywise, etc. Very little stuff about love, emotions, romance, etc. (Mix that with my fascination of horror, and you got a very wacked-out combo! lol) So I think focusing on the macrocosm has been ingrained in me at a very early age. It's a hard habit to break. So, what I *try* to do is play to my strengths, ya know? I try to write what I think I'm decent at. In fact, I honestly believe that the "love story" aspect of HOMETOWN (Btw. Donnie and Andrew) is my weakest part of the story. I just do not know how to write "love" that well, and when I try, it kinda sounds forced.

I'm getting better, though. There's a small bit of romance-y stuff in HOMETOWN 2, and I think (so far!) it seems more natural than what I wrote in the first story.
