I guess ultimately it depends on what kind of story one is telling as well as what kind of emotions/feelings they wanna stir up in the readers. I can agree that when the situation calls for it, it could be necessary in a coming-of-age story between two individuals who are in love, especially if the sex scene furthers the plot or adds a bit of emotion to the characters. And I can also see how it can make things more realistic, sure, if the authors intention is a bonding of those characters in that way. The way you use sex in Gone From Daylight, I think, is absolutely wonderful. (Especially Justin and Taryn's first time, of course), and it's used sparingly enough that when it does happen, it MEANS something.

It really comes down to intent I suppose, and (and you said) what one wants to focus on. (Big Head vs. Little Head lol), which is of course why there's soooo many different types of fan-fiction out there: Slash (Lemon and Lime), Non Erotic Shipping, Angst, Darkfic, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Rationalist, Curtainfic, Rebuild, etc and etc. lol. Now obviously, explicit sex scenes would not be used (or would even make sense in quite a few of those types fanfic types...Rule 34 notwithstanding! lol), so ultimately it really depends. I personally gravitate towards Angst and/or Darkfic. Now, I know you don't write fanfics, you have original universes, but for me who is writing essentially a Silent Hill fanfic (the characters and plot are all mine though), aside for the reasons I listed in my OP, I also don't think erotica would work well in a pure horror story, especially a horror story of that type. Believe it or not, when I first outlined my idea for the first HOMETOWN, I wasn't even going to include a love interest! I finally did because I felt that it would give Donnie (and the reader) a sense of urgency, and to give Donnie a reason for pressing forward. I also thought it would humanize him. Turns out, readers liked that aspect of my story the most! (Go figure), and there will be a lot more of that in HOMETOWN 2: Crimson Ice....but, two different characters. :)

However, even when I begin writing my own original stories, and believe me I will one day, I don't think they would be sexual. For me, my primary interests lie in horror and science fiction, and while of COURSE there's a place for sex in those genres, and can be done EXTREMELY well (Savage Moon and Gone From Daylight!), my style personally would be more like say, Stephen King or a written version of Stanley Kubrick or David Lynch. I like to Mind-Fuck my readers, rather than turn them on LOL. And again, it's not the age of my characters that bothers me...as I said, I write around 17/18 to 22-ish for the most part (close to my age which is mid 20's), and I still would be iffy about writing them in graphic sexual detail, and I think it's because I don't really write love stories in general, per se, I do use it as a backdrop and...window dressing?...if that's the correct phrase. :P That's not to say I would never give it a try down the road. If I did, would I use graphic sex? I honestly don't know.

I just don't think I'd be very good at it.
