Subject: Sex in stories

When I first started writing for public consumption, it was mostly for my schoolmates. There was a great deal of porn value which carries quite a bit of currency in an all boys school.
As my writing progressed it divided into two categories. One in which the principle aim was to titillate and the other a serious effort of telling a story.
I find that sex scenes are acceptable in proportion to the significance sex holds within the story. I have written stories with only inference or mildly erotic passages. It depends greatly on the characters ad what would be right for them.
I commend you River, if accounts are accurate you and a scant few others are all that support a multi-billion dollar porn industry. It has always amused me that we Americans are so thoroughly obsessed with sex but won't acknowledge that we look at porn.
My approach to writing sex scenes within a story has changed quite a bit since my earlier efforts. Being relatively young my experience is somewhat limited but my imagination is not.
I believe that in any romantic relationship between two people that sex is a factor. It can be described in lurid detail or hinted and inferred at the other end of the spectrum. The story and characters dictate what is appropriate behavior. Since the characters inform the writer as much as we inform them.
Perhaps I could suggest a topic I find lacking in a lot of stories. That being humor, many of the stories I've read are quite good except for the lack of it. If I want constant bleak and despairing I can read Austen. Tears and laughter go hand in hand and we are extremely funny looking whilst engaging in sex. Nobody gets it right all the time. Plenty of people have fallen out of bed during the act, myself included. Bedclothes can be treacherous by feigning a solid surface.
To sum up,sex is part of life and has a place in fiction,. How much is up to the writer and their characters.
