Nervous here. A few years ago, I found some unusual growths and went to planned parenthood to check them out. They said they were genital warts, and the doctor froze them off. He froze the external ones, but didn't do anything to the internal warts. It was a horrible time healing, but the warts eventually went away on their own. It's been about 4 years and I haven't had any visible warts since then, although I have noticed I'm more prone to yeast infections since that time. I thought I was fine until I recently have been researching this online and realized that no testing was done at the time. I've only gotten pap smears, which have come back negative, but should an HPV test been done at the time I had the warts frozen off? I have a pap smear in a month at a free clinic, should I ask for an HPV test, and will that even do anything? I'm worried I may have overlooked this problem years ago and it may have progressed into a bigger problem. :-/

Hi Samantha...visible warts are low risk HPV types generally 6 or 11. These types are not seen in cervical cancer.

Your virus was on the vulva...most likely your cervix also carry the infection but low risk HPV types seem to regress fast. Our HPV test looks for high risk HPV types.

Your Pap did not find an abnormal cell changes...so an HPV test is not always done. An HPV test is usually run after abnormal cells are found.

If you are over 30 you should have an HPV. This test should be run regardless of what your Pap smear finds. We are seeing where a Pap is good but it often misses cells.

If you would like this article just let me know…it is on our HPV info site in yahoo groups.

Be diligent with your Pap smear, if abnormal cell changes are missed on year..then the next year the smear will probably find them. If you are over 30 I will hope that the clinic you go to will do this test for you.

I hope this help rest your mind a bit.

Myra
