Hello all. This will be a VERY generic message as I have only begun to read a bit about 'feuis life'...though I've been interested in irish dancing for quite awhile and have agood background which may help me in starting out..IF that is a possibility!
I am 21 years old, soon to be 22...ANCIENT by Irish dance beginner's standards!!
I took tap and jazz dancing in my hometown of Fredericton, New Brunswick, from the ages of 3 to 9, and then continued on with learning Canadian step dancing from age 9 to about 11.
However, illness struck me down after that, and I was unable to advance my little dancing career, but it still feels totally unnatural for me, not to be dancing.
I have a normally small frame, but have obviously put on weight..I weigh about 140 pounds now, and I'm 5'4.
I realize you must be healthy and in excellent shape to lift your body weight off the ground in the soft shoe dances, etc.
So though I am passionate about celtic dance and I know I can do it if the facilities are there..I am extremely flexible, physically, that is, I'm not ignorant as to certain basics a beginner must have, and now, after scanning several feis and dance related sites, I'm more intimidated than evenr, and sarting to get totally discouraged!
I'd like to hear from an adult or someone my age, an adjudicator, or experienced feis parent, regarding whether there is ANY HOPE for someone almost 22 who might make an EXCELLENT Irish dancer (I'm 100% celtic too, and don't forget, I can step dance anyway..)
(I was not trained in Highland dance as my mother feared it was too competitive for me, and she wanted me to hae a fun, easy childhood...I wish she HAD put me in Highland dancing!)
If anyone on this board can tell me of any schools within reasonable distance, I'd love them for it!!..ie: as I live in Fredericton, NB, it would be reasonable to travel to Saint John (A 1 1/2 hour drive) for lessons, but crazy to try and get to Moncton on a regular basis!(A 3 or 4 hour drive!)
I am very familiar with the whole Celtic scene as I grew up on it...ate it, slept it, breathed it...I also play the fiddle, and am an enthusiastic supporter and attendee of all the celtic cultural events that go on around here ;-) And I want to get back on a stage.
though this would be more of a hobby to start off with..('m seeking a career in musical performance)I am nevertheless more than willing to do the diet and excersise thing, etc,etc..and make the necessary sacrifices to learn this art form if there is a group of adult beginners near me!
Anyway, this post is way too long..my point..please, anyone in the know, an adult preferably with alot of experience, if such a person could inform me as to my chances of being accepted to begin dancing at all, and whether or not there are classes near my area that welcome older beginners, I would be extremely grateful for any insight into this bewildering new world.
Please reply with any pertinent information to my email address as listed above (or click on my name.)
Sincere thanks,
Leslie.
