I would say that what is godly music is music that lacks a senual beat and has lyrics that stay biblically correct. One cannot sway their hips to Amazing Grace or To God Be The Glory. True godly music is not entertainment. We must sing from the heart to the Lord in the beauty of holiness. The world cannot receive such music because it knows not Christ.

Here is a short quote by Gordon Sears: "Please bear with me in what I'm about to say. The gospel of Jesus Christ has never and will never be popular with the unconverted world. If the Christian's music is truly spiritual, it will not be received with the world! Mark it down: the only religious music the world will receive is the kind that appeals to the flesh."

The worldly desire "the beat" and the whaling vocals. The whole purpose of music is to worship the Lord and to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs for edification. Read the Psalms-- they praise God and many are prayers unto God. Part of the problem why CCM is so bad is not only the music-- that feeds the flesh with the sensual beat-- but also the lyrics of many songs are not in accordance with the Scriptures. There are Charismatic artists promoting their "latter rain" and as I call it "spooky" stuff-- where folks are encouraged to delve into trances to achieve proper worship. The hypnotic beat and repetitive lyrics is essential in their worship music.

There are the CCM artists who see nothing wrong with being in the world and a participant in worldly affairs. The bible says, "Love not the world." Who are the people of CCM and what do they believe? What kind of theology is being introduced using song? Considering the fact that there are wheat among tares-- the same applies to the Christian music industry. There are professing christians who have yet to be born again. This "Christian" industry follows the secular music trends. Whatever is on the Top 40, that is what they are after in the CCM industry. The spirit behind their music will become a part of your thoughts. God calls us to be separated. We are in the world but we should not be influenced by the world. We should be lead by the Spirit.

God is Holy. Worldly music stirs up emotions-- but God doesn't want emotions-- He meets us in worship when we worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Be still and know that I am God. The Lord says to keep our words few. How can our minds be stayed upon Him if we have whaling guitars and drums beating in the background? Your feet are tapping, your hands are tapping to the beat but it is just occupying precious prayer time.

I must also caution people that the devil uses beautiful music too. Just because something is beautifully sung does not necessarily mean it safe to listen to. I am a Fundametal Baptist today but I grew up in the Pentecostal movement. Many pentecostals believe that music that gives them warm feelings or goosebumps is annointed. Any beautiful music is classified as "of God." But I would caution people that the devil makes beautiful music too.

Music is a powerful influence in the hands of the devil. I will give you a quick example. Many years ago, back when I was still Pentecostal, we went to a Benny Hinn event to check him out in person. For this particular event, there was a fee involved. We paid it and we went to witness first-hand what he was all about. During his healing segment, he called row by row up to be anointed with oil; there was beautiful music playing the ENTIRE time. It was interesting that people were falling left and right but when the music changed to a different song, the people were no longer falling down. So Benny yells out in anger and he was angry, something to the effect, "Play something nice...I am losing the anointing...hurry...hurry." And at that point he was hurrying to get everyone anointed before he lost his "power". Now we know that such "anointing" has nothing to do with God but rather driving folks into a hypnotic state using music. Any expert will testify that the crowd must be in an altered state to "experience" and that music and emotionalism is essential with these so-called faith healers.

Not too long after that event, we left the Pentecostal movement.

What we have learned is that God does not need music to reach a person. We can be sure that Jesus did not walk around Galilee with a symphony of musicians following Him from place to place. God's power is real. He does not need music to display His power. We sing unto Him for we love Him and He is worthy to be praised and worshipped.

Beware of vocalists that sing to be noticed by the congregation. John the Baptist said, "I must decrease" and thus Christ must increase. His strength is made perfect in weakness. Music that is repetitious is not biblically correct. The Lord hates repetitious prayers...what must He think about songs that are repetitous with the same lyrics and beats over and over again?
