Subject: Sexual Harassment and Civil Rights 101

Sexual harassment is not about sex and romance, it’s about power. It’s fine for you to sit back and say “she makes choices, live with it” of “she has a bad reputation” from the comfort of your anonymous armchair. Meanwhile, a woman with children to raise on a lousy part-time job with the city was pressured into an extremely compromised position out of fear of losing her only source of income. What kind of choice is that?

People who engage in these kind of twisted and perverted power relationships don’t stop at one victim. It’s an addiction for them. Like the priests who victimize powerless children, they need to be stopped. This isn’t a case of guilt or innocence – an investigation was done and all of the allegations were proven true. By the city attorney. He’s not out to protect either the victim or the accused, but rather the city. He’s saying that the accused should be terminated immediately.

The Supreme Court has held that women have a civil right NOT to be treated like sexual playthings by their bosses, just like minorities have a right NOT to be discriminated against when they apply for jobs or housing, and gay and lesbian people have a right to be treated like everyone else when it comes to their rights and family relationships. If you can’t stand up for this case, you’re not standing up for anything else either. Wake up. This is a huge issue for Newburgh. About time we all stood together and stopped this nonsense.
