 Tyrsis gasped as the words poured from her mouth, feeling the black swell up in her throat. She couldn't close her mouth, couldn't stop the runes from flaring to life, burning deeply. For a moment she felt deathly cold, as though life was being taken away, Kenji's actions unnoticed and the emperor's words unheard over the staccato vibration that rattled through her mind. Life was on hold, something deeply and insanely wrong rising up inside of her, falling, then rising again.

It might have been hours. Minutes maybe. Darkness settled across her, threatened by a counter point beating of her heart, rythmic and fast even as she lay down near gracefully on her side and let sleep take her.

The rod at her side was a coppery hue.
