"Be friendly about it, of course. Explain to him he has been invited to sup with me, due to the unusual time of his arrival," he explained, knowing that even a masquerade of civility might ensure cooperation, even from one who had the nerve to make demands. "Explain of course, that as a peaceful entrant in the city, he has every reason to wish to dine with me," he explained, the warning there hidden. "Explain it in those words," he finished.
