Jarek spoke as they walked, "I don't belong here. I shouldn't be a BloodKnight, I've been one for years but it was just because I had become a close friend of Zygenda Forwynd, Janai's mother. I actually remained freelance and avoided any contact with the clan, they would send people to get me and I'd do their missions and go back to my other life. I ended up fighting along side the primary forces in the capitol city of my own choice and since then Jonath and Sage have been wondering what to do with me. Then Janai asked that I come on this mission with her and here I am.... I never should have been a BloodKnight."
Dawnsfire looked thoughtful for a moment before speaking, grey eyes fixed on him as they walked. She hadn't realized that the reason he'd told her nothing was wrong earlier was because he hadn't wanted to show himself as weak to those he commanded. Calm flowed around the young Shaman and finally she spoke, voice loud enough to be heard over the steady beat of the horse's hooves striking the ground. "If you were not meant to be a Bloodknight as you believe then your skills would not be called upon so frequently. Your fellows respect you and I can see why. You should look not on your faults but on what you've done. You are a strong person Jarek and perhaps it is that strength which calls to those others, the ones who keep calling you back." Dawnsfire didn't know the names Jarek had listed but it didn't matter, he knew them and what they represented.
Jarek nodded listening to the Shaman and smiled. "When I first learned shadow magic I was an orphan, Jihad of the Shadows took me in and when I showed natural talent in shadow magic he began calling me Shadow Blood. He taught me all his secrets, and now here I am, years younger then him and already past his level years after he died. I met Jonath and Zygenda right after joining the Royal Army. They sent me to give Jonath a message asking for the aid of his BloodKnights. "I felt scared, there were only a few BloodKnights left after the demon war scourged them all and Jonath was their leader. I met with him eventually, a few years later I met with him again when he had asked the Royal Army to send an assassin.. They weren't to keen on helping the BloodKnights so they sent me, a rookie... He made me a BloodKnight, taught me a bit and sent me on a mission. Been a BloodKnight ever since.
Dawnsfire smiled and shook her head. "Somehow assassin is not what I would have believed to be your calling Jarek. You have the.... the pull of a leader. Someone who is born to lead, not just taught the skills they need. I was a child myself when Amberstar, our Shaman, took me in.... I think I was six or perhaps five and he knew what I would be able to do someday. He trained me as his... his replacement. By the time I was seventeen people were coming to me for aid rather than Amberstar. He was an old man and they tried to keep their need of him to a minimum. He was slaughtered, cut down in his gardens by the elves when they attacked. He knew I would be needed by our people. Perhaps Jihad knew that your skills would be needed and trained you to the best of his ability, knowing that you would far exceed his skill. I think you do yourself a disservice by saying you do not deserve to be a Bloodknight. From what I have seen your people are honourable and worthy of so much." Dawnsfire took a breath before continuing. "You came here to help the humans, people you had never met, might not ever see again and for what? Surely there isn't any reward great enough for what you and your people are doing?"
Jarek listened silently and thought, That was the second time today someone had tried telling him that he was meant to be a BloodKnight. "I kill people, it is what I do. We came here because of a threat of darkness" Jarek let out a soft chuckle and clenched his fist, "Who would have expected that the darkness would come from one of our own."
"You might kill people but you don't do it indescriminately. You came because of a "threat of darkness" and now your beating yourself up over the fact that the one who this darkness flows from is one of your people. Unless your sight of the future is flawless you could not have known such a thing would come to pass. Your coming here may very well save the lives of countless humans. You've already saved two...... one of which is..... very grateful for it." Dawnsfire fell silent, knowing that he would understand the human that was grateful was her. Before Simple had led her and Silverfox to the camp she'd felt adrift, a feather in a gale with no way to choose her path. Now she had a direction, even if she could not see where the road would take her.
Jarek nodded lightly, his eyes distant. "Yeah... I didn't have the sight before today, and if it is anything like Janai's... It'll be pretty much flawless." Jarek muttered under his breath about a 'him' and 'jackass'.
Dawnsfire chuckled softly and shook her head. "Apparently her sight was not flawless.... if it had been she would have seen what was going to befall her and taken steps to prevent it." She heard the word 'jackass' muttered and idly wondered who he was referring to. It wasn't likely he was referring to himself..... or to her for that matter. "It's what you Saw that's making you hurt inside isn't it? Your aura is like shattered glass, all sharp edges and bleeding colours."
"It's that I gained it and that I saw what happened to her. She knew what was going to happen to her and went anyway. She either went or we lost Lashana and all hope of finding your people. She almost made it out in time." Jarek sighed, and thought about it. "I also saw Jihad when he was my age... His wife was killed while pregnant... It tore him up inside. I don't know why I saw that though."
"Perhaps you saw it to show you that even pain like what Jihad suffered can be survived. And..... I do not know this Lashana but perhaps another way to find other humans exists." Dawnsfire kept walking and then without warning tossed her arm up, hand fisted just as a white and black blur sped past Jarek to thump against her outstretched wrist. Whitestar chirruped and trilled at her agitatedly before settling down enough that she could transfer him to her shoulder. "Whitestar is a friend who I nursed back to health. His wings were so badly broken that he should have died from the pain...... but he survived. Pain isn't always the means to end things.... sometimes it merely shows just how strong the spirit within is."
Jarek smiled and nodded. "Probably." His voice was calm and his mind calmer, they weren't far from the Bloodknight camp and once there he could speak with Sage or Jonath, they would both be waiting for him... And his report. "Dawnsfire, I know who did this to your people and why... But I can't discuss it with you yet."
