>“You are very perceptive. I believe that is what has kept you alive and relatively successful until now.”

She nodded silently at his words, though her perception was both natural talent and training. As he moved off the sight and sound of the Black Wind faded until it was no longer percieved. As he moved towards the window she began to reach into one of the various pouches at her belt, suddenly grateful that she'd gone after the belt. Several of the herbs and powders had various properties, some benevolent and some deadly if used in the right amounts and combinations. When he spoke again her head came up in startlement.

>“You seek no reward you say? Ah but the strengthening
>bond between you and Zenra is no reward? Is that not
>what you sought as you pursued your duty? Perhaps you
>were selfless, I am not a mind reader…but
>nevertheless, you have gained a reward…perhaps one
>larger than you can imagine.”

Her protest died on her lips, knowing it would be unheard, though it still echoed in her mind. I sought no reward and I would have done the same for the girl unasked. Zenra's plea was of a mother in need of help and as a Shaman I could not refuse. Standing abruptly after Seraph left she began to circle to bed, a fine white powder pouring from her palm. She made a wide circle around both the bed and the chair, the ground tigarleaf gleaming white against the floor. It was one of those herbs that held several properties, the best one being the ability to ward off magickal attacks and to give a basis for a shield that would ward off any other attack. Sitting back in the chair she began to hum softly, focusing herself and concentrating on creating a barrier to keep out unwanted visitors. Finally she stopped humming as the powder on the floor began to glow and taking a deep breath she began to speak, her voice soft so she wouldn't reawaken Emi if she'd fallen asleep.

~"This barrier of leaf and sound
I summon forth to surround
A child and a Shaman spent
Until dawn's light is sent."~

The powder flared dully, the circle around them both pulsing for a moment as a visible sign that the barrier had been successfully erected before fading. It would remain and keep all attacks at bay until the bright rays of morning streamed in through the window. Not much but it was all Dawnsfire had the energy for, but hopefully it would be enough.
