Subject: Just finished Heart of Christianity

Just an hour or so ago I finished reading this book. I have to say that in
the future when asked what book I consider most influencial in my life, I'd
have to say this is the one. After reading this, I do honestly feel I can
call myself a Christian.

I think the one thing that was really pivotal was the idea of the death and
resurrection as well as an afterlife. I think Borg's discussion of these
things finally clinched it for me. He describes the death and resurrection
of Jesus as a metaphor for a dying of an old way of living and a new birth
(a.k.a. being born again) into a life in Christ (a.k.a. with God). This
isn't a totally new concept and I believe I remember reading that idea
discussed here, but for some reason reading what Borg had to say about it
just made it work for me. And people who are so sure about an afterlife
tend to make me back away. I just really have trouble with the whole thing.
But I like how Borg acknowledged that no one can really know for sure and it
isn't even the main point of Christianity. It shouldn't be about what
happens after you die, but about a transformation of your life in the here
and now. That was probably one of my biggest complaints about Christianity
before I discovered this emerging view. Rather than worrying about what
requirements I (may or may not) have to do before I die, I think it's more
important to focus on growing closer to God and in bringing compassion and
justice to creation.

What a wonderful book.
