“也必不按律法滅亡” 易令人以為 “ [也必]　[不　滅亡] ”﹐ 誤讀為 “也必不滅亡”。

English Standard Version﹕
" For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law ". Those who do not have the law and yet have sinned will also perish whereas those who knowing the law have sinned will perish too.

　"all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law"
　all who have sinned.........will...perish.........　
　Subject + "will" + Verb(perish)

In this way, ESV tells a rather clearer meaning of the verse which, in the Chinese version, seems to be rather equivocal, causes misinterpretation easily if reader is not careful enough.

　　沒有律法而犯罪﹐ 與有了律法而犯罪﹐ 兩者都是犯罪﹐ 都是得罪了神﹐ 後者犯罪滅亡﹐ 前者也照樣滅亡﹐ 不過對後者則按照他們所得的律法針對他們犯的罪來定他們罪﹐ 然而﹐ 兩者都有罪﹐ 都要滅亡。不論他們有﹐ 還是沒有神的律法。

保羅繼續說﹐ 別以為你們猶太人有神的律法很了不起﹐ 你們如果不按律法行﹐ 你們在神眼中也是不義的。“在神面前，不是聽律法的為義，乃是行律法的稱義”(verse 13)。

那麼﹐ 你身為猶太人﹐ 明明知道神的律法﹐ 怎麼卻不行出來呢﹖

“你稱為猶太人，又倚靠律法，且指著神誇口；既從律法中受了教訓，就曉得神的旨意，也能分別是非﹐ 又深信自己是給瞎子領路的，是黑暗中人的光，是蠢笨人的師傅，是小孩子的先生，在律法上有知識和真理的模範。你既是教導別人，還不教導自己嗎﹖你講說人不可偷竊，自己還偷竊嗎﹖你說人不可姦淫，自己還姦淫嗎﹖你厭惡偶像，自己還偷竊廟中之物嗎﹖你指著律法誇口，自己倒犯律法，玷辱神嗎﹖ ” (verse 17-23)

“凡沒有律法犯了罪的，也必不按律法滅亡”。沒有律法犯了罪的﹐ 仍然會滅亡﹐ 不過不按著律法﹐ 而滅亡。

“凡在律法以下犯了罪的，也必按律法受審判”。在律法以下犯了罪的﹐ 則按照他們所得的律法﹐ 針對他們犯的罪﹐ 來定他們罪。

　所謂不知者不罪﹐ 知法而犯法總比不知法犯法壞。不知法而犯法﹐ 還有人情講﹐ 不一定有罪。那麼﹐ 沒有律法的外邦人犯罪為什麼也要滅亡﹖ 當中的原因﹐ 按和合本與ESV 有限資料﹐ 暫時不能確定。也許﹐ 因為 “.....律法的功用刻在他們心裡” 吧。也許是因為﹐ 律法本來就在他們心裡﹐ 只是沒有猶太人知道的律法那麼具體而且清晰吧。

我們無法肯定異教徒有沒有犯罪﹐ 可是﹐ 我們知道沒有一個人生來是不犯罪的﹐ 所以﹐ 有99% 把握可以確定異教徒是活在罪中﹐ 也死在罪中的。如果不信耶穌﹐ 或者如果沒有聽過耶穌﹐ 他們有99%可能性是會滅亡的。
