看完幾米的漫畫作品《微笑的魚》,張三說:「人的鼻子哪會這麼又高又尖……這不是好的漫畫!翻開《大英百科全書》,李四評論:「書中一堆堆文字,沒有插畫,悶得要命……這不是具權威的百科全書!」讀著孟浩然《春曉》的一句「春眠不覺曉,處處聞啼鳥」,小明批評:「春天也不一定是處處鳥啼……這種描繪太不真實,這首詩不配有經典地位!」手拿著《鹿鼎記》,小強嚴肅地說:「當中的細節並非歷史真相……《鹿鼎記》不是頂級小說!」

  張三、李四、小明及小強的判斷,你一定不會苟同。為甚麼?因為不同性質及範疇的作品,該有不同的優劣好壞的判準。經典的漫畫不必具有嚴謹的論理,可是哲學巨著就必定有此特質;你不會因為一首詩充滿著超乎現實的想像而判斷它不是好詩,但當一本科學著作是超乎現實時你必不會認為它是科學權威。

  聖經呢?它的記載是否必定要符合歷史、它對物理世界的了解必定要符合科學、它的教導必定要符合倫理標準,它才是信仰權威?究竟聖經是甚麼性質及範疇的書呢?如果你堅持它必定是歷史地真的才是信仰權威,你只是把它貶為歷史的權威;如果你堅持它必定是科學地真的才是信仰權威,你只是把它貶為科學的權威;如果你堅持它必定是倫理地真的才是信仰權威,你只是把它貶為倫理的權威。

  聖經是「宗教」經典,它是基督教「信仰」的權威!宗教經典的權威性,自是基於宗教的判準,而不是基於歷史、科學等的判準,正如你不會要求頂級小說所講的故事是曾在歷史中真實並如實地發生過。

  如何在(後)現代世界中肯定聖經的權威呢?David Tracy的The Analogical Imagination*很值得參考。這書雖並不是針對聖經權威而寫,它的論述卻對此難題提出了很具說服力的出路。當今最重要的聖經百科全書(The Anchor Bible Dictionary)中有關的文章,就以Tracy的理論作為後批判時期(Post-Critical Period)的重要代表。

  你想更有理由地去堅持「聖經權威」,而又不必盲從附和牽強的解釋,及不必視而不見聖經在歷史記載上的前後矛盾和當中前科學期的天真世界觀嗎?The Analogical Imagination可以使你有新的領悟。
