But the situations are different. The O.T. story was about a miracle performed by a prophet. After the miracle, the soup the people drank was not a poison any more. That N.T. verse is assertion, with remarkable certainty, of impossibility of believers to be harmed by snakes and poisons.

信的人手能拿蛇；若喝了甚麼毒物，也必不受害. (可 16:18)
