This is fun.
IF YOU WERE ARRESTED FOR BEING A UU, WOULD THERE BE ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO CONVICT YOU?
(A Chancel Drama by Richard S. Gilbert - Ithaca, NY - 3/28/04)
PROSECUTOR: Your Honor, Ms. Uni is under arrest for being a Unitarian Universalist - and frequenting that well known house of heresy, the First Unitarian Church, located on the corner of Aurora and Buffalo Streets, Ithaca, NY.
The accused is charged with unauthorized possession of dangerous ideas; engagement in subversive activities designed to undercut the status quo of our beloved nation; lack of creedal precision; corruption of children by teaching them how to think, not what to think; heretical attitudes toward the one true morality on which our civilization is based; refusal to accept the Holy Bible as the revealed word of God; remaining silent during the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, greatly upsetting our beloved Justice Antonin Scolia; conspiracy to promote the diffusion of religion into the totality of life and thus undermine Sunday religion under which this nation has prospered; and advocacy of the religion of Jesus as found in his teachings rather than the religion about Christ as revealed by Mel Gibson.
JUDGE: Just a minute, just a minute, counselor! The defendant is accused of being a Unitarian Universalist. Would the prosecutor please define for me and the jury just what this is.
PROSECUTOR: That's just the point, Your Honor, they experience a singularly difficult time in defining themselves.
JUDGE: Do they have a creed?
PROSECUTOR: No, your honor.
JUDGE: Do they have a dogma?
PROSECUTOR: No, Your Honor.
JUDGE: Do they have a traditional ritual?
PROSECUTOR: No, Your Honor.
JUDGE: Are you sure they're a church?
PROSECUTOR: They claim to be, Your Honor. They call their meeting place a church, contend they have ministers and religious education.
