I don't think it is such an old question.
2:14-20 --Faith and Deeds
14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?"
Of course not. But what is the deed. I would say the deed refer to real good work. To feed the poor, to help the sick, to fight for the oppressed.
15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
16 If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
Is that clear enough? Just words or prayers is nothing. If my brothers and sisters are hungry, it is my duty to feed them. This duty is from the faith that I have within me.
But who are my brothers and sisters? If we are all children of God, then everyone born are my brothers and sisters.
17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
Faith by itself, without action, is dead. It is dead faith. It saves no one. I helps no one.
18 But someone will say, you have faith; I have deeds.?
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
There is not possible to show faith without deed. The deed is being misinterpretated by the fundies as 'recruitment to the fundie church'. But that is obviously not the deed James was talking about.
The deed James talked about, is 社關. I have no doubt about that.
I would show you my faith by what I do. That is the motto of many Liberal Christians who actively participate in social movenment and community services.
19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that and shudder.
Wow! James was coming down on those who claimed to believe in God but do nothing. James pointed out that even demons believed that.
Tell that to the fundies who refuse to do any good deed.
I think it is good that we talked about, act upon it.
I could work with fundies on 'non-Controversial' issue feeding the poor, and helping the sick. But I don't it is right to force feed 'dogma' to those who are in need. (Which btw, is what some fundie churches did.)
