Brookside used to deliver ice to Bush Avenue iceboxes as late as 1941, and Muchattoes, to Farrell Street iceboxes up to 1946 or 1947...even though my own wealthy, filthy rich family had acquired, first, a Frigidaire and then later, a Crosley Shelvador back in those days. (Crosley had 'invented' a refrigerator that featured shelves on the inside of the door, hence the name.) Rolling in the bucks though we were back then, my mom used an open fire in the back yard for all cooking, and created the concept (in Newburgh, anyway) of the barbecue grill.
