I remember as a kid in New Windsor, we had the next step up from the old-style 'Ice Box' - a little 13 cu.ft. 1952-era Kelvinator refrigerator with a very small little "freezer compartment" within the refrigerator area itself, with a little plastic door on hinges, for frozen things and ice... I remember having to empty the drip pan for my Mom, and helping her 'defrost' it every so often when the frost/ice would get too thick around that compartment. She fed a family of 6 from that little thing for many many years...
We had that until we left for California in 1967. I think we may have been the last family not to have a 'frost-free' fridge in the whole town...
I'll never forget how excited my Mom was, when she bought her first 'frost-free' refrigerator, a 'fancy Rust-color'20 cu.ft. Kenmore from Sears in 1967. And she hung on to that baby for over 30 YEARS!!! It ran great until it finally died of embarrassment in 1995, at an opportune time for her... One of her sons (who also grew up to be a certified Wackoo) happened to be working at Circuit City at the time, and was able to get a hefty discount on a nice new Kitchen Aid... which she still is using today!
Ok... was this too much information?
