But one thing I do remember from that short time at that little schoolhouse, was the Air Raid Siren at the Fire Station every few weeks (or was it once a month?) and having to duck under our desks. Little 5-year olds with no concept of Nuclear bombs or blowing up, it was just plain surreal as I think back on it... Many years later, in California, I was about 14 yrs old and had not been through those drills for years... we had a large earthquake early morning of Feb.9, 1971, and in my sleep during the shaking I automatically ducked under the shelf by my bed, just like I did during those old drills, not even realizing it as I awoke to the shaking, and finding myself in that position under a shelf holding a stereo, record albums and books... I had to push off a pile of debris and broken records, etc. off my back and shoulders when the shaking stopped... It might have saved my life! If I had not done that, it all would have crashed right down on my sleeping face as I laid there. Funny how that reflex kicked in to duck and cover.
