Years ago, I acquired a classic Bill Doak model left-handed fielder's glove, courtesy of a kind uncle who had access to the Army Air Corp's stash of athletic equipment at Stewart Field. It had "H"-shaped webbing (which I've heard was the first outfielder's baseball glove design to feature webbibg). It also had a deep, unpadded pocket which stung the heck out of my right hand, so I usually fielded a thrown or batted ball into the webbibg. Over the years, I had to replace the leather thongs that held the webbing in place, several times, and last used it in a game situation in the late 1980's. One of my kids later left it too close to our pet doggie, and within 15 minutes, the dog had chewed the glove to bits. So what came from cowhide in the first place, 40 years before that, was recycled as pet food, saturated over the years with neatsfoot oil, as it was. The dog never got over that, and we had to put her down. There may be a moral to this, but I'm not sure what it is.
