Subject: Using scanners and CTCSS suggestions and erros.

Hi Everyone,

I have just been lookint through the site. It's interesting however I would like to clarify something and correct an error. The reason I know this is I have been a radio enthusiast and radio amatuer for over 15 years.

1) You stated it is not legal to listen on a "scanner". This is incorrect. It is illegal to impart to anyone else priveliged information gained whilst listening on a "scanner" or other general-coverage receiver. This is a distinct difference.

2) Why use channel 8 WITH 88 as the CTCSS for calling. Convention in the amamtuer world is to use NO CTCSS on calling channels. This is because the CTCSS tone is not neccasarily identifiable as such due to interference or singal fade on a weak transmission. Because of this greater range can be achieved by turning CTCSS off. Also, if you turn CTCSS off you hear EVERYONE regardless of whether they are transmitting with CTCSS or not and are more likely to be able to make a contact. You can also tell if a weak signal is being swamped by someone else who you would not be able to hear if you had CTCSS turned on. CTCSS is only useful when you specifically want to communicate with an indivdual or group without interference from others, using PMR446 for general calling does not fall int this category.

I hope you don't mind my comments.
