The Rakke and Zero contact is to be commended.
Directional Antennas are the "only way to go".
Good Antenna's minimize radiation in every direction except where you are talking to.

To gain the longest range without an antenna, One or both of you need to be at 30,000 feet with a nice large window facing each other. By about 100 Kilometers the power from a handheld has just about disappeared. To keep it going, some form or external antenna is necessary.

To avoid expensive aircraft rental, its a lot easier to build some high performance Yagi's and talk across Europe.
