I look at dating (and most things in my life) as research for my book: The Life of Suzanne. If you tell yourself "Hey, the worst thing that could happen is I have a funny story to tell when I am 80 years old in my rocking chair on the porch"--it takes away some of the pressure. I actually started a email chain called the Dating Chronicles when I was out dating. It really did make things a bit more fun. Also, it makes you more brave if you tell yourself you are going to write a funny story about it the next day. Do you want to write a book called "I thought about walking up to her?" or "I was brave and tried something new...what's a little egg on the face anyway?" I can tell you the second one will get a lot more laughs. Hey: Isn't is all about laughter anyway?
