Is that really so unusual? Who doesn't have conflicting desires? Could your conflicting desires include having experiences with several people versus finding someone special? Closer connection with a community versus maintaining your independence? Having a career versus time for more pleasure? Maybe they are not really conflicts, but simply a question of finding the right balance.

Maybe what you are experiencing is the over-arching desire to live a rich, multifaceted life. If so, join the club. I believe to do that, one has to be willing to experiment and to fail. I know too well that is easier said than done.

So maybe, when your are ready, you take a chance and give in to one of those desires. Then you check in with yourself and see how you feel. Part of the adventure is taking a risk, but only if you are ready and want to.

I hope that whatever you choose you enrich and are enriched by all you encounter on your journey, whether it be sensually, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually. I wish that for both you and Carl on whatever level you choose to participate. So, for the record, good luck on your journey.
