Subject: Yea!... healing...

Tuesday afternoon

Hi Jean,

So much very most cool… I went to orthopedic surgeon today. It felt good to be away from rehab center, out and about for moment. I left Beaumont Hospital with the restriction of strict “toe touch” only, which is only using the toe of the foot of the right side fracture of the pelvis for balance with no weight on it at all. I was very good at mastering the mock steps here with only one leg and crutches. I did 16 stairs yesterday doing it that way. Today the surgeon examined the new X-ways compared to summary report on previous X-rays from hospital. He said my fractures are healing very well. The surgeon upgraded my restriction to 50% weight bearing with 25% increase per week for four weeks. I did the mocks steps just a moment ago. What a breeze it was. It took just a few steps to unlearn the maneuvers for toe touch and learn the new maneuvers for 25%... less energy, less muscle, less intricate balancing, safer going up and down. I am going to have no problem with my stairs at home. The surgeon said in general the less pain I feel the more weight I can put on the bad side of the pelvis. The surgeon did not say anything about driving. My physical therapist was concerned about this. I told him that I did not have any problem with driving being I use my left foot for the brake and I exercise my bad side with ankle weights while sitting down. The physical therapist who is oriental or Pilipino maybe, said that he never heard of anyone using hers or his left foot for braking. After a bit the physical therapist came to my room and said he had talked to the surgeon’s receptionist and she said that I could not drive until I had full weight bearing, which is four weeks from now. Right, if I can make it up my stairs and take care of my self at home by myself, I’ll be driving. I’ll go out pick up small things like milk and bagels and carry them up in my backpack and then my son can take me out for larger amounts of stuff. I am being discharged this coming Monday the 22nd. Tom and I stopped on the way back from the surgeon’s office and got a coffee at Caribou Coffee house. My medium size “Carmel High Rise” coffee was so delicious: absence makes one fonder, eh? The coffee here is going to taste so yucky at dinner.

That is it. I thank you muchly for listening.

RICHARD
