Subject: Re: Toupe' update.... again
In reply to: Sandy 's message, "Toupe' update" on 15:03:10 05/30/06 Tue

**This has been cut & pasted from a message I posted on a support board for cats with this condition so I hope it will format ok*

Possibly some semi-good news. The doctor called me this morning and
he said that on the x-rays all Toupe's organs looked good so before
he cut him open again, he wanted to use a needle to draw out some
fluid from his abdomin area and see what's in it...look for pus or
other stuff that shouldn't be there. He said he'd call me back and
let me know what he found. In the meantime I emailed one of the
doctors in Charlotte who was on a list that Carol posted to me and told him
what was going on. He emailed back and said that it sounded like the
doctor was on the right track and that I could bring Toupe' to his
clinic, which is an hour and a half from me, if I wanted but he
thinks it sounds like the doctor knows what he's doing.

So... later the doctor who is caring for Toupe' called back and said
that he didn't see any indication of leakage in the fluid he took
from Toupe's abdomin. He had the other doctors who work with him to
look and they agreed that it looked like what you'd normally see any
time there was any surgery performed on the abdomin area. (The 2
doctors who are in with him have reputations for being excellent
surgeons..I just haven't heard of this guy but that doesn't mean he
isn't a very good doctor either and at least he is conferring with
the 2 that are supposed to be so good) Anyway, he said that they are
sending the sample to a pathologist to have it checked to see if they
find anything in it.

I asked him where the infection is if it isn't leaking. He said that
he isn't 100% sure there is an infection even though there were
indicators that do point to that. But his temperature is back down to
104.6 instead of 106.5. His white blood cell count is low and that
does indicate that they are being used up by fighting something.
So...he says they are going to keep him on fluids and the
antibiotics, see what the pathologist says about the sample and run
more tests and see what happens.

That sounds maybe a little encouraging. You'd think if his colon is
leaking feces, it would show up in the fluid, wouldn't it?

Anyway... that's his update. Thank you all for your well wishes and
your research and help on this. I'll keep you posted. He's definitely
still a sick little guy but maybe all the warm thoughts and prayers
will help him.

Thanks so much.
Sandy & Toupe'
