Hi,
Are you referring to the Sexuality Law Reform Committee? I'm sorry if I advertised it as being for gay and lesbian law students :-( Of course, the committee is intended to include bisexual and transgender law students as well; in fact, it is open to anyone who simply has an interest in sexuality issues.
Unfortunately, I feel that there is no appropriate word that can include all non-heterosexuals and transgendered people. Even the word 'queer' can be seen as excluding lesbians and bisexuals, as it has traditionally been applied only to gay men, e.g. the Queer Movement, Queer Politics.
I refuse to use the word 'queer' for a number of reasons:
1.) It means, in its traditional sense, 'odd', and I don't believe that just because a person is not heterosexual he or she is odd;
2.) It is unclear as to who it includes; and (most important)
3.) It has usually been applied derogatorily to gay people, and may therefore offend some people.
For these reasons, I decided to call this LSS portfolio the 'Sexuality Portfolio' rather than the 'Queer Portfolio'. I believe that the term 'Sexuality Portfolio' is very inclusive.
From now on, I will try to avoid any references to just gay and lesbian law students :-)
It seems to me as though you have a keen interest in sexuality issues, so it would be great if you joined the emailing list and attended the next meeting of the Sexuality Law Reform Committee, which will be held within the next two weeks.
