The views you expressed are quite rightly described as a radical feminist perspective. See Sheila Jeffries for similar views - I believe she is speaking at the gay marriage debate, isn't she?

I favour gay marriage per se because I believe that marriages provide the most stable bases for relationships and families and that this is a good thing for the individuals concerned and society generally. As well, I think that the image of stability and normality that gay marriages will convey is the best way of changing societal attitudes to accept gay and lesbian people.

But putting my support for gay marriage per se to one side, I think that even those like you who are against marriage as a point of principle should support the political push for gay marriage. I say this because it is the best way of convincing an overwhelmingly conservative populace that same-sex couples are deserving of legal equality. Even if you believe that we should be fighting for a celebration of diversity from oppression, presumably you believe that same-sex couples should be free from discrimination and therefore given legal equality to opposite sex couples. While your ideal might be abolition of all marriage and granting of equal legal rights to various forms of relationship, that just isn't going to happen given the innate conservatism of Australian society. The next best option is gay marriage - at least it removes discrimination against same-sex couples. Otherwise you are sacrificing the chance of removing tangible discrimination for vague political principles. That is a sacrifice I'm unwilling to make. And I think that any gay or lesbian person who is denied access to their dying partner in a hospital because they are not technically a family member would agree with me.
