Subject: De-farbing Bayonet

There's many a man who ganined himself a fortune fobbing off worthless junk to the U.S. Government in the guise of sound goods. This was true in the earliest days of the Republic. It is true today. Therefore, take propper pride in any equipment that is a piece of junk. Being issued trash is a valid impression.
If grinding the "India" off makes the spot prone to rust, does this mean the item is plated in some fashion? HMMMMMMM
Keeping it oiled would be good. Olive oil works well on anything you might be eating with and it is a propper period rust preventative. Add a bit of brick dust to it and you've a fine metal polish.
OR
Let the sucker rust, then soap over the tell-tale spot. A method long favored by slackers such as myself.
OR
periodically go over your metal with sand or gritty dirt to give it a mellow glow
