A month before Election Day, something occurred of much greater importance to Chloê and me than the election: the birth of our first child, my daughter Erika. Like many expectant fathers, I had initially hoped that my first child would be a son, and when the doctor said that it was a girl, a tinge of disappointment touched me for a moment. But when I looked at her and held her in my arms, I was just thankful to God to have her and pleased that she was so perfect. We named her Erika Lindsay Duke. Gazing into her bright eyes I saw the eyes of generations before me and the generations ahead. A year and one-half later, Chloê and I again were blessed with another beautiful and healthy daughter, Kristin Chloê Duke, and she would prove in later years to be just as dedicated to the cause as I am.
